New future for The Department Store in Enschede?
In an article in the Tubantia newspaper, our colleague Erik Workel pleads for the preservation of Cultural Heritage in Enschede. Read a short summary of his story below. The link to the full article can be found at the bottom of this post.
"Several years ago, IAA Architecten, as a design firm involved with the city, managed to save De Melkhal (The Milk Hall) in Enschede from demolition. Together with a property developer, we showed that transformation was possible, allowing us to preserve the industrial architecture and open it to the public.
Now we are working on another iconic project: the transformation of the national monumental former department store of Vroom & Dreesman into ‘Het Warenhuis’ (‘The Department Store’), the new accommodation for Concordia (visual arts, education and cinema) and Theater Sonnevanck. Two essential institutions for the city's cultural climate and liveliness.
Despite a significant state subsidy, the project faces financial challenges. The article is an appeal to Enschede's politicians to explore all possibilities to support this initiative for the users and the city."
